When should I place out my cart/bin?

According to the city of San Fernando’s municipal code Sec. 70-103. Regarding placement and removal of containers, it states that every residential householder shall place each solid waste, recyclables, and green waste container for collection at the curb in front of the premises, or at the curb at the side of the premises where the premises are adjacent to more than one street. No person shall place any such container for collection earlier than sunset of the day preceding the day designated for collection, and all containers and receptacles shall be removed from the place of collection prior to 10:00 p.m. of the day the containers have been emptied. Such containers shall be removed to a storage location, which is not visible from any public right-of-way, excluding alleys.

What are bulk items?

Bulk items are large items that do not fit inside the trash cart or bin. An example for commercial businesses could be office furniture or equipment. An example for residents could be furniture, mattresses and box springs.

How many free bulk pickups do I receive annually?

Single Family Residences are entitled to a maximum of 6 bulk item collection times per year. Items collected shall be a combination of loose large items not to exceed an approximate equivalent of four (4) cubic yards and two (2) individual large items such as a TV, couch, or water heater. Please call our customer service department 48 hours in advance of your collection day at 800-299-4898 to schedule a pickup.

Multi-Family Residents are entitled to two (2) bulk item collection pickups once a year. To schedule a pickup have the property manager contact our customer service department 24 hours in advance at 800-299-4898.

Commercial Customers may call for a bulk item pickup for an additional fee. To schedule a pickup contact our customer service department 24 hours in advance.

What is hazardous waste?

What do I need to do to start service?

Call our customer service department to set up service at 800-299-4898.

Will my service be delayed by holidays?

Republic Services observes the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If one of these holidays falls on your collection day, your service will be delayed one day for the entire holiday week. For example, Mondays collection will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday’s collection will be on Wednesday and so on. Your service will resume its regular collection schedule the following week.

What is Universal waste?

Universal waste is a category of hazardous waste. This category includes fluorescent lamps, cathode ray tubes, instruments that contain mercury, household batteries, and electronic waste. These items can no longer be placed in the trash and must be disposed of safely.

How do I dispose of Universal waste?

Republic Services will pick up, from the residences of San Fernando, household batteries and fluorescent lamps on your day of service. Place household batteries in a re-sealable bag. Fluorescent bulbs and small electronic waste items should be placed in a cardboard box. Set the bag(s) and box next to your cart/bin for pickup. Please call our customer service department to schedule a pickup at 800-299-4898 at least 48 hours in advance of your regular collection day.

Additionally, San Fernando residents can deliver their universal waste to Republic Services yard located at 9200 Glenoaks Blvd., Sun Valley, CA, for free, with proof of residency.

San Fernando commercial businesses are entitled to 3 free universal pickups per year. Please contact our customer service department to schedule a pickup at 800-299-4898 at least 48 hours in advance of your regular collection day.

How can I dispose of used oil and used oil filters?

San Fernando residents are entitled to free, used motor oil & used oil filter collection services. Please contact our customer service department at 800-299-4898 to order city approved containers before you change your oil. The oil container will hold 4 quarts and the oil filter container will hold 2 filters. To dispose of the filled containers contact our customer service department 48 hours in advance of your collection day. Your filled containers will be picked up and replaced with empty ones upon request.

How do I dispose of cooking oil?

Large amounts of cooking oil should not be flushed into drains or septic tanks and can be recycled at a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility.

What is composting?

Composting is a natural process that turns organic material into a dark rich substance. This substance, called compost or humus, is a wonderful conditioner for your soil.

What is worm composting?

Worm composting is using worms to recycle food scraps and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost, or worm compost. Worms eat food scraps, which become compost as they pass through the worm's body.

How do I dispose of medical needles and sharps?

Medical needles and sharps are considered Hazardous Waste and are illegal to dispose of in carts. If you have any sharps that need to be disposed of, please contact our customer service department at 855-737-7871 to order a sharps collection container.
