Service Information

Every day, we’re working to meet the needs of Salinas customers. Rely on us to provide cost-effective garbage collection, recycling programs and solid waste disposal for your home, for your business and for government while minimizing strain on the planet’s resources.

Residential Customers

  • Carts must be set out for service by 6:00am on your designated collection day.

Business Customers

  • Carts or bins must be set out for service by 4:00am on your designated collection day.

Solid Waste Guidelines

  • All trash must be contained in the cart or bin issued by Republic Services.
  • All household trash should be bagged. Bagging your trash will help keep the cart or bin clean and sanitary, and prevent litter on windy days.
  • For proper servicing and public health reasons, the lids must be completely closed. If the lid is not closed due to the cart or bin being overfilled you will be subject to an overload charge.
  • If extra bags are placed outside the cart or bin you will be subject to an extra bag charge.
  • Please call Republic Services to upgrade your trash service to avoid these charges.
  • The carts and bins remain the property of Republic Services. Please do not take them with you when you move.
  • Place carts at least 6 feet away from any automobiles, mailboxes or anything else that would impede our ability to service.
  • Salinas code requires that basketball hoops are removed from the street on collection day
  • For residential customers the placement of your cart is very important, since the collection vehicle’s lifting arm requires clearance of 3 feet on both sides of the cart and 12 feet overhead.
  • Carts should be facing toward the street with the hinges facing away from the street.

Items that CANNOT be placed in the trash container: construction and demolition debris, dirt, sod, concrete, rock, hot ashes, hazardous waste, batteries, light bulbs, tires, medical waste or flammable materials such as oil, gas and paint.

Organic Waste

If your business or multi-family apartment complex generates organic waste, California Assembly Bill (AB) 1826 requires you to participate in an organics recycling program, depending on how much waste you generate.

The law phases in the requirements over several years. Businesses and multi-family complexes (with 5 or more units) must recycle organic waste by the following dates:

  • January 1, 2020 – generators of 2 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week
  • January 1, 2019 – generators of 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week
  • January 1, 2017 – generators of 4 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week

What is organic waste?

  • Food waste
  • Landscape and yard waste
  • Non-hazardous wood waste

Republic Services offers both food waste and yard waste collection services for businesses and multi-family complexes*. This service can be incorporated into your regular weekly service to enhance current diversion activities. By participating in this program, you are helping conserve landfill space, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and complying with City and State laws.

If your business or multi-family complex is subject to AB 1826, please contact our Recycling Coordinator at 831-751-5453 for more information about how to meet the requirements.

*Apartment complexes are not required to recycle food waste, only yard waste
